Frank McNamara’s lifelong love of music began at the young age of four when he started playing the piano. His dynamic career in music was launched when he made his Irish national television debut on the TV show “Encounter” at the age of 11. By 13, he was studying piano with Rhonda Marshall and composition with James Wilson at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, where he received several awards, including the most outstanding pupil award. He also studied piano with Peter Katin in London and Canada.
Frank became pianist with the RTE Symphony Orchestra (now the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland) in 1978. In June 1979 he became the Musical Director of RTE’s “The Late Late Show”, a position at which he excelled for 20 years. In 1981, Frank graduated with music honors from Trinity College in Dublin.
He released his first solo album, “Irish Reflections”, in October 1985. It went straight to No. 1 on the Irish Pop Charts and stayed there for three weeks. Since then he has had several gold, platinum, and triple platinum records in several countries including Ireland, New Zealand and the United States both as a soloist and as a producer of others.
In 1992 and 1993, he produced and arranged two consecutive winners at the Eurovision Song Contest – a live pan-European television spectacular watched by over 200 million viewers - taking over responsibility as Musical Director for the 1997 event.
In 1998, Frank applied his considerable talents to working with the highly successful group The Irish Tenors. As their original arranger, producer and music director, Frank was responsible for creating the “sound” of the Irish Tenors. The group released five albums with Frank, all of which achieved considerable success and topped the Billboard World Music Charts. Frank has completed numerous tours with the Irish Tenors in the United States, Australia and New Zealand and three PBS specials.
He was the producer/musical director of "Messiah XXI" (now known as "The Young Messiah") which was an adaptation of Handel’s "Messiah". This $2-million production was originally created as a part of the Irish National Millennium Celebration in 1999. It starred Gladys Knight, Chaka Khan, Roger Daltrey, Jeffrey Osborne, the Irish Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir and the Visual Ministry Gospel Choir. "Messiah XXI" has been broadcast worldwide and has been released on CD and DVD. On October 18, 2002, Frank helped stage and produce a performance of "Messiah XXI" in Warsaw, Poland as part of a Gala Event for the President of Poland, the Prime Minister and other distinguished guests. This production (with lyrics in Polish and English) was broadcast live on Polish Television.
Since its release in February, 2002 Frank's work, entitled "A Time to Remember", with the popular tenor John McDermott, has also reached No. 1 on Billboard's list of World Music. "A Time to Remember" was released as a PBS special and on DVD and CD.
Frank spent a large part of 2002 and 2003 founding, producing, arranging and conducting The American Tenors. Their album reached No. 5 on the Billboard Crossover Classical Chart within the first few weeks of its release. A PBS television special, filmed in the beautiful Kodak Theatre, was shown on PBS stations throughout the United States in March 2003. Frank pulled the entire taping of the show together raising all the investment and acting as the Executive Producer, the Artist Manager, the Arranger and the Conductor. This special was released on DVD as well.
Frank was also the Music Director of LeAnn Rime's Symphonic Christmas 2004 tour, and he appeared as her conductor. The tour brought many rave reviews for Frank's orchestration.
2005 found Frank as the Music Director of an exciting symphonic concert series entitled "Argent Mortgage Orchestrated". Full orchestras backed international superstars, including LeAnn Rimes, Seal, Jewel and Duran Duran, for one-of-a-kind events. In addition, Frank conducted the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for Ben Folds' three-concert U.S. orchestral debut. He celebrated Christmas orchestrating sold out performances of "Christmas at the NAC” with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, Canada in both 2005 and 2006. Frank’s latest CD, “Mary Lowe – Jazz Diva”, was released in the fall of 2006.
Although Frank is a classically trained pianist and conductor, his musical interests and talents are very diverse including rock, pop, jazz and country in unique mixes. Frank has conducted some of the world's leading orchestras, including The Pittsburgh Symphony, The Royal Philharmonic, The Melbourne Symphony and The Boston Pops, and his musical works have been performed in many countries, including Ireland, the United States, the United Kingdom, Russia, Poland, France, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia.
Frank wrote his first symphony at the age of 15. Since then, he has written numerous works for orchestras as well as several TV themes and music for Irish television. His orchestral albums contain many of his original songs. Frank wrote a four-part movement classical work named "Beatlesymphony". This work was performed internationally and was based on Beatle melodies. His other works include a Rolling Stone overture, a Simon & Garfunkel suite and an ABBA piano concerto. In addition to his five albums with The Irish Tenors, Frank has made three albums with oboist David Agnew and four solo albums with orchestras.
